Newham Mechanics Institute
The Newham Mechanics Institute has been an integral part of the Newham community for over one hundred years.
Rich in the history of our town, it has provided great service over the years as a location for meetings, polling booths, parties, weddings and more. It is run by a dedicated and hard-working committee of volunteers and has survived financially through fundraisers, revenue from bookings, and grants from the council.
The Hall re-opened in December 2009 after extensive renovations, including a new supper/meeting room, kitchen, storeroom and toilet block, as well as an upgraded parking area. The re-development was paid for by grants from the Regional Development Fund and MRSC, and over $30,000 raised by the local community.
With renovations to the building now complete, there are ongoing plans to develop the surrounds with landscape planting and a community orchard at the rear.
Many local community groups now use the hall as a base for meetings and events. There are a series of term-length classes in strength training (Thursdays) as well as the long-running walking group (Tuesdays) who use the hall facilities.
